Jamie D. Bowen. Don't question it. Just go with the flow. And flow with it. At least deal with it.
Jamie has had a varied career starting out in the competitive world of radio, moving into the even more competitive world of television and most recently in to the down right cut throat business of comedy. His diverse talents have taken him around the world and won him awards. Jamie's star is not only rising. It's shining brightly.
Radio was the first medium to pick up on Jamie. His love of music and ability to communicate with a diverse range of people saw him hosting shows on 9inety6ixdot1, ZM, George FM, Rampage Radio, The Voice and The Edge. Jamie was rewarded for his efforts with the job of hosting Alt. on TVNZ's music station M2, introducing him to a wider national audience and giving him a recognition factor.
1999 saw Jamie taking a new direction after an encounter with two chaps Mick Andrews and Brett O'Gorman performing in "A Comedy of Errors". The trio recognised their potential for hilarity and before long were writing and performing at the local comedy club. Their name was simply GARY. Hilarious. And one of the best comedy acts New Zealand has produced was born.
GARY teamed up with two like-minded comedians Rhys Darby and Grant Lobban. Together they penned their first show "Earthlings". This show had more nonsense than a txt m3ssag3 frm a 12 yr ld gurl lol ;-). Spaceships, dance routines that would impress Tom Jones, and an Intergalactic Sketch Comedy Competition that was quite frankly out of this world.
This provided the impetus for GARY to move onwards and upwards, performing in four sold-out New Zealand International Comedy Festivals between 2001 and 2004. 2001's "Absolute Gary" won them 'Best New Face' at the Festival Awards. A year later, in 2002, GARY were recognised with a Billy T Award nomination for their show "A Forbidden Score", their silent movie with a live self-performed sound track. The prestigious award recognises outstanding potential and GARY certainly had this up the wazoo. Another Billy T Award nomination followed in 2003 for their show "Happy as Gary" along with appearing in two seasons of TV2's Pulp Comedy.
2004 got a little bit crazy for Jamie. He played Devout Lout in the cult-classic New Zealand play "Wild Cabbage". GARY teamed up with Rhys and Grant again and filmed a TV pilot "Who's Ya Mate". Jamie performed with GARY in "Gary: A Best of..." (GARY were televised as part of the Big Comedy Gala) and his debut solo show "Victim of Trend" - both in the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. "Victim of Trend" saw Jamie receive his first solo nomination for the Billy T Award, a unique achievement.
A year of discovering the world, himself, love and a whole bunch of crazy times followed. Performing in "The New Zealand Comedy Showcase" and "Xprov" at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival saw Jamie conquering the toughest audiences in the world.
After a stint in Singapore acting with a 6ft tall Pinocchio Puppet for surely delighted children, Jamie took on the stand-up circuit in Melbourne. He developed a character as a bi-curious Cuban drug lord to take on the fickle audiences, quelling male hecklers by sticking his tongue down their throat and winning over the rest with his charming nature. There's more than one way to shut up a heckler. Jamie could, indeed, be said to be a pioneer in this respect. The Pash Put-Down.
He has now established himself as one of the most exciting comedians on the local scene performing stand-up and songs, which see him rated as one of the best. 2006 saw Jamie winning the New Zealand Comedy Guild Award for 'Most Improved Comedian' followed in 2007 with another Billy T Award nomination for his sold-out show I do these things so you don't have to....
There are few performers who match his energy and commitment onstage. Damn funny. If he achieves his goals (flight and telepathy) he'll be unstoppable.
